We worked alongside Chris Ralph Architects to provide the foundation and structural design for a new-build ground-floor garage with a first-floor annex, replacing the existing garage. Our involvement included the design of a cut roof incorporating dormer windows to the front of the building. We coordinated our structural design with the architect’s proposals to ensure the client’s requirements were met and the structure suited the intended design. Strip foundations were initially expected to be suitable; however, the foundation approach was revised following a site visit.
We provided the foundation design for the new garage and first-floor annex. Following the site visit, piled foundations and ground beams were designed to account for the site conditions.
Our structural design also included steelwork to support the first-floor joists and the design of the new garage opening. We provided the structural design for the cut roof, including the dormer fronts, and coordinated the structural elements with Chris Ralph Architects’ proposals.
The ground fell away quickly at the rear of the garage and there was a heavy tree coverage which meant that strip foundations were unsuitable therefore meaning pile and ground beam designs were required
The staircase fabrication meant that the minimum 2m head height could not be achieved using the original trimmer arrangement. A mule post and revised trimmer design were required to trim the stairs appropriately and achieve the required head height.
The final design provided a robust structural solution for the replacement garage and first floor annex. Working alongside Chris Ralph Architects, the foundation design was developed using piles and ground beams due to the site’s conditions, while the revised staircase trimming design helped achieve the required 2m head height. The completed design package supported the proposed new structure, addressed the key challenges identified during the project, and left the client satisfied with the work that was carried out
