Structural Design
Hewitt & Carr Architects
The £100k Balance and Beam project involved a feasibility study for an upward extension to form a new first floor over an existing gymnastics facility. We were appointed by Hewitt & Carr Architects to provide structural input at concept stage, marking up the existing as-built drawings with a proposed structural scheme and options. Our appraisal considered the existing steel frame and reinforced concrete raft foundation, supported by foundation and steel beam calculations and an analysis model of the structure. We assessed four options for the new first floor: retaining the existing beams, replacing them with larger sections, introducing additional beams between the existing ones, or supporting the existing beams from the new roof structure via vertical posts, with the first two found not to be viable. Our markups also identified that the existing stair would need to be relocated to suit the proposed layout.
